The creative and artistic capabilities of portable picogen mostly consist of generating landforms, mountains, rivers, vegetations and trees, all of them rendered via raytracing.
The landforms are directly rendered on the canvas by arranging vertices and elevating them by a certain amount. A common landscape formation setting entails two consecutive rows of elevating vertices, being the lowest elements the fundament. Another popular setting is to have in every single element one vertex at ground level, and arrange them higher by a certain amount. This approach results in an artificial looking terrain formation, with a tumbling or rolling ground surface, which is smooth and rounded.
The land elevation can be controlled by several parameters, such as height increment, distance to be mounted on the canvas, bias for steepness, and so on.
Some landforms are predefined and inbuilt in picogen, such as platforms, dunes, crescent-shaped bumps, hills, deserts, etc. There are also additional landforms that are xtemplates (templates) that can be easily imported or exported as ZIP-archives.
To create a new landform or object, one needs to first set up the scene, and then lay down the basic elements.
Depending on the kind of object one wants to create, there are different ways, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.
The shape can be arranged via point/click/drag/drop, and the placed coordinates can be easily adjusted via resize/move/rotate functionality. To extract the object from the scene, place a bounding box on it (the method can be changed via drop-down menus or setting buttons in the settings panel).
According to the object shape and size and the surrounding terrain, the land form can be modified to look natural, such as blending in the sides with the surroundings, or using a slant, such as inclinations, to give the landscape a more natural look. It is also possible to shift the object along the two y-axis, which distributes the land formation in a more natural way.

San Francisco (AP) – A 19-year-old woman was arrested in the slayings of four men at a San Francisco hostel who investigators suspect had been shot with their own firearms and were attacked after a dispute over rent.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Steven P. Tingirides said Sunday that Angelica Alvarado of San Jose was arrested on suspicion of four counts of first-degree murder at the hostel, reported KGO-TV in San Francisco.
Tingirides said the inmates shot the four men at the Sunnydale Lodge in the Mission District after a disputed payment for a room.
“The suspects went there to collect a payment but the homeowner who lives there said he didn’t have it,” Tingirides told The Associated Press.
He declined to say how many men were shot or discuss why the killings took place.
Tingirides said the suspects accused the four men of committing a robbery and took one into a bathroom. When it was clear they didn’t have money, the suspects forced them out of the restroom into the lobby area, where they shot them.

What’s New In?
The software has been designed to facilitate the creation and visualisation of heightmaps, using a friendly interface, therefore, the absence of the most common method to render the images in real time: the raytracing.
The raytracing engine is not part of the Software, therefore, it is possible to use and render all kinds of surface, ranging from completely abstract (flat) surfaces to highly detailed ones. At the same time, the use of ray tracing may be considered slow when compared to many real-time rendered methods.
While this may be true for some scenes, there are cases where the raytraced method is preferred, or even required. Just take a look at the recreation of Rubik’s cube, by Demian Katz, where the 3D terrain (constructed using the raytracing method) was extremely impressive, but the areas requiring raytracing were not so.
Another advantage of the raytracing engine is that the entire image is rendered in real-time, therefore, it’s very much scalable in terms of the required processing power, and more generally the number of surfaces.
Two important features that enhance the software’s flexibility is the fact that it’s not exclusive to the field of visualisation (terrain mapping is just one of its application areas), and the fact that it’s able to render images using both the CPU and the GPU.
To make the process even more accurate, picogen comes with a set of pre-rendered images to reference, a number of which have already been used as examples on this page.
One of the things we care most about in the picogen software is the lighting, and in a very short time the most important features have been implemented:
bump mapping (bonus to my followers at the start of the development). Bumpmapping is used to enhance the visual appearance of “flat” surfaces (with textures). All available references are included in the software, therefore, it’s up to the user to decide which one is most suitable to his purposes.
Texture mapping. The possibilities here are practically infinite, as the available texture atlases are huge, and perfectly suited for a truly grandiose aesthetic detail.
The software also provides a simple helper applications, most notably the GIMP pixel editor. Gimp allows the user to preview the current generated images, from which the user may edit/replace certain surface (the individual pixels which appear on the image).
